Catholic Education Resources

Educational Professionals

Dedicated administrators and teachers are licensed professionals who energize local faith communities and model the teachings of the Catholic Church to new generations. Each of the Catholic Schools is incorporated separately from the diocese and hires administrators and teachers locally to serve the student body.

Licensing Information for Educators

All educators are required to complete 125 clock hours in a five year period.  Each individual takes the responsibility for completing coursework and monitoring licensing requirements set forth by the State of Minnesota.

Superintendents and Principals can apply directly to the Department of Education using pre-approved clock hours only for continuing education.  Clock hours submitted by teachers do not require pre-approval but must be submitted with verification through the local committee for approval.  All records are then processed and entered through an online system. Click here to access individual records for licensing through the State of MN website:

It is important to keep abreast of new state standards and connect with locally elected representatives serving the personnel at each site for updates or questions. Note that some area public schools offer services to licensed educators for processing continuing education clock hours and attending in-service opportunities.

The Diocese of Winona has its own committee which processes continuing education clock hours for all educators working in or retired from Catholic Schools in the diocese.

License Renewal Requirements

The 2009 Minnesota Legislature enacted language in Minnesota Statute 122A regarding license renewal for Minnesota teachers.  Teachers are required to submit evidence of work that demonstrates professional reflection and growth in best teaching practices in accord with these requirements. Click here to download the specific descriptions for the required areas pertaining to all license renewals.

Continuing Education Committee

The Diocesan Committee for Continuing Education is made up of representatives from area Catholic Schools.  This committee meets four times annually to review and approve continuing education clock hours for licensed professionals.  Clock hour units must be completed on current forms and mailed to the Office of Catholic Schools for approval.  Submissions are accepted any time during the year. However, all forms are held for processing at one of the annual meetings.  The schedule for the CEU Committee Meetings is published in September of each year and includes the required dates for information to be mailed and the actual date of the meeting.

Continuing Education Forms

The Diocese of Winona Continuing Education Committee has established a current set of forms available for clock hour submissions.  Each educational experience must be submitted on the appropriate form and verification of the event must be attached to received credit.  Once processed and approved, clock hours will be entered into the online licensing system with the State of Minnesota through the Office of Catholic Schools.
